objective of this tutorial is to\u00a0identify selected key motor drive control technologies for marine\/aerospace electrical propulsion systems, including torsional vibration suppression strategies using active damping, hybrid electrical\/mechanical active damping for LC-filtered motor drive with inertia-stiffness-inertia (JKJ) system, next generation advanced V\/f control with field weakening, maximum torque per ampere (MTPA), and oscillation suppression functions.\u00a0The motivation is to help researchers and engineers identify the selected key challenges in electrical\u00a0propulsion system area\u00a0and provide control solutions to address those challenges.<\/p><ul><li><b><\/b><strong><b>Novelty, highlighting the technical innovations presented in this tutorial<\/b><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p>This tutorial will cover several innovations as below,<\/p><p>(1) For motor drive with multi-rotating mass system with multiple resonance frequencies, controller design guidelines are provided to suppress the first mode torsional vibration while ensuring the other resonance modes will not be excited during step load change.<\/p><p>(2) For LC-filtered motor drive with mass-spring-mass system, by leveraging the current loop delay equivalence model, a unified stability criterion is established for the active damping of both the LCL and JKJ subsystems.<\/p><p>(3) Mechanical Load characteristics for propulsion systems are fan (aerospace) or pump (marine) types.\u00a0V\/f control will be re-evaluated by incorporating field weakening, maximum torque per ampere, and oscillation suppression functions. There exist multiple resonance modes for inverter\u00a0driven\u00a0multi-rotating mass system.\u00a0A\u00a0shaft torque derivative feedback control using a nonideal generalized\u00a0integrator\u00a0is proposed with detailed design guidelines provided\u00a0to suppress system first mode oscillation while not affecting the\u00a0stability of other resonance modes.\u00a0To address high dv\/dt issues of VSI, one\u00a0common solution is to add the LC sine filter, forming the LCL circuit\u00a0with the stator winding inductance. In the LC-filtered motor drive with mass-spring-mass system, both electrical and mechanical resonances coexist.\u00a0Design\u00a0guidelines\u00a0are provided for oscillation suppressing of both electrical and mechanical resonances within a unified framework.\u00a0A\u00a0weighted average speed (WAS) control strategy is proposed and validated which\u00a0reduces the inverter-driven motor with two-mass system from third order control plant to first order, thereby circumventing the mechanical resonance\u00a0and greatly simplifying the controller design.\u00a0<\/p><p>Mechanical Load characteristics for propulsion systems are fan (aerospace) or pump (marine) types, which are suitable for utilizing V\/f control. For the next generation advanced V\/f control, a second-order modelling method of V\/f control is performed and a near unity damping ratio control is achieved through small signal analysis. Under this control framework, a field weakening control method based on a modulated voltage saturator is proposed and validated. From April 2013 to December 2013, he was a Postdoc Research Fellow with the Energy Research Institute, NTU. From December 2013 to July 2020, he worked as a Principal Technologist in Rolls-Royce Electrical, Rolls-Royce Singapore Pte. Ltd. From September 2020 till now\uff0che is an associate professor in the Energy and Electricity Research Center at Jinan University. In his current position, he has led various research projects including one NSFC funded project, and won the sponsorship from Major Talent Program of Guangdong Province.
